Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church, founded in 1867, has a rich history, yet continues to adapt to the needs of the 21st Century. Since Reverend Nelson became pastor, Sixth Mount Zion has shifted from being a historic church to a church that is committed to addressing issues impacting the lives of members in the congregation and community. Sixth Mount Zion values hospitality, relationship building, biblically based learning, and community impact. Guided by the mission statement of "empowering people to live a Christ-centered lifestyle", members of "The Mount" have stepped outside of the box to meet the needs of God's people in unique ways which include illustrated sermons for Resurrection Sunday; Don't Just Go to Church, Be the Church; Holistic Hurt, Wholistic Healing Conference; an annual National Night Out Block Party; and the most recently added, Mount Market.
Reverend Nelson has a heart for working to meet the needs of people, using Matthew 25:34-40 as his life scripture. He is involved with several different community, religious, and civic organizations.
